2019 Edmonton Pride Festival Theme
We would like to thank all those who took the time to vote in the fall! The theme for the 2019 Edmonton Pride Festival is…
Building Bridges from Stonewalls
2019 marks the 50th anniversary of The Stonewall Riots in New York City. Following a police raid of The Stonewall Inn, LGBTQ2S+ New Yorkers fought back against the injustice of the police raids and started what was then called the Modern Gay Rights Movement. In the years and decades that followed, our community fought time and time again against mistreatment – always with the goal of gaining rights and equality. As the Pride movement took shape in our own city, the Pisces Bathhouse Raid in 1981 became Edmonton’s own Stonewall, causing Edmontonians to take a stand against the mistreatment of our community. We continue to gain rights, freedoms, and protections under the law, and are always working towards equality. We have built bridges and gained allies, but we can never forget the struggle that got us here – and the struggle that continues for those still marginalized within our community.
This year’s logo serves to remind us that Pride is built on all the colours of our flags. While pride is the bridge that can bring us together, the coloured bricks represent flags in our communities and together are the foundation of all the work that we do.
