Maureen Irwin Award

Maureen Irwin had a lust for life, a nose for good times and a big heart. Maureen was the first openly lesbian woman to ever be granted with the Government of Canada’s Volunteer Award Medal and Certificate of Honor, which formally recognized her lifetime of volunteerism and advocacy. Maureen was a member and contributor to many queer groups and organizations in Edmonton such as GATE, GLCCE that later became the Pride Centre. She was also a founding member of Womonspace, as well as contributed to queer publications like Perceptions magazine. Not only was she a part of these groups but also apart of social actions, around the Supreme Court's decision in the Vriend case. She was a role model for many. Her legacy lives on in the award in her honor.

Maureen Irwin avait la joie de vivre, elle savait bien s’amuser et elle possédait une disposition chaleureuse.  C’était la première femme ouvertement lesbienne de recevoir une médaille de bénévole et un certificat d’honneur du gouvernement du Canada, des prix qui reconnaissent une vie dédiée au bénévolat et au plaidoyer.  Maureen participait à plusieurs organismes ‘queer’ à Edmonton, y compris GATE et GLCCE, qui est devenu le centre Pride.  Maureen était un membre fondateur de Womonspace et elle contribuait aux publications ‘queer’ comme le revue Perception.  Elle a participé dans le mouvement social après la décision du Cour suprême dans l’affaire Vriend.  C’était un vrai modèle pour beaucoup de gens.  Son histoire est représentée par le prix qui porte son nom.
