Sheryl McInnis Award

Coming into Academia later in life Sheryl approach her studies with determined gusto, immersing herself into the world of Woman’s Studies with passion and focus. Known always to be reading – even if a great party was raging in the room beside her - Sheryl used her growing knowledge in the community work she did volunteering on many University events and early Pride week lectures.

With her partner – fellow award namesake Maureen Irwin – Sheryl was active in Edmonton LGBT community. Having been a wife and now a partner as well as a mother and Grandmother Sheryl was able to braid together what she was learning about through Women’s Studies and see how it applied to lesbian, trans and bisexual women in Edmonton. Today we honor Sheryl by presenting an award in her name to people who continue her legacy of using information to provide power.

Rentrant à l’université tard dans sa vie, Sheryl c’est mis à étudier avec détermination, s’immergeant dans les études féminines avec passion et concentration.  On disait qu’elle était toujours en train de lire – même si on fêtait dans la salle à côté – et Sheryl appliquait ses nouvelles connaissances au travail communautaire qu’elle faisait avec l’université et la semaine Pride.

Avec son épouse – Maureen Irwin, après qui un autre prix a été nommé – Sheryl était un membre actif de la communauté LGBT à Edmonton.  Étant épouse, mère et grandmère, Sheryl a pu joindre sa vie avec ses études et appliquer ses connaissances aux femmes lesbiennes, bisexuelles, et transgenres à Edmonton.  Aujourd’hui on reconnaît Sheryl avec la présentation d’un prix à quelqu’un qui démontre le lien important entre l’information et le pouvoir.
