Michael Phair Award

One of Edmonton's most influential and colourful political figures, Michael Phair has tirelessly worked as an activist and advocate throughout his career. After helping to seed programs that have since grown into HIV Edmonton and the Edmonton Pride Center, Phair stifled initial speculation of being a single-issue politician with the sheer number of initiatives he has helped to spearhead. Over the span of 15 years as Council's "social conscience", Phair has had a hand in establishing progressive policies in areas of environmentalism, advocacy for impoverished and immigrant minorities, and especially in helping Edmonton to become a cultural capital. His efforts also founded the Edmonton Arts Council, Edmonton's world-class recycling program, and Exposure: Edmonton's Queer Arts and Culture Festival. The aptly named award truly reflects the honor of the recipient's achievements. Thanks to Michael Phair for contributing to Edmonton's queer history and for enriching this city's quality of life.

Parmi les personnalités politiques les plus influentes et animées à Edmonton, Michael Phair a travaillé sans cesse comme activiste et avocat pendant toute sa carrière.  Après avoir contribué à la fondation des programmes qui sont éventuellement devenus VIH Edmonton et le centre Pride d’Edmonton, Phair a surmonté sa réputation de politicien qui s’intéressait seulement à une cause en travaillant sur bon nombre de projets divers.  Pendant les quinze ans où il jouait le rôle du « conscience social » du Conseil, Phair promouvait des politiques progressives dans les domaines d’environnementalisme et le soutien des immigrants pauvres et minoritaires, et il assistait surtout à l’établissement d’Edmonton comme centre culturel au Canada.  Il a aussi contribué à la fondation du Conseil des arts d’Edmonton, le programme de recyclage à Edmonton, et Exposure, le festival ‘queer’ d’art et culture à Edmonton.  Le nom du prix symbolise surtout les accomplissements de son destinataire.  Merci à Michael Phair pour ses contributions à l’histoire queer d’Edmonton et pour avoir amélioré la qualité de vie de notre ville.
